Ahead of International Women's Day on Monday 8 March 2021, we did a short Q&A with some of the incredible women within our workforce to understand what this day means to them, how other women have inspired them and what we as a society can do to progress towards a gender equal world.
Featured below are the responses of Shirley Li - Assistant Finance Manager at DOOLEYS Lidcombe Catholic Club.
What does International Women’s Day and this year’s slogan #ChooseToChallenge mean to you?
The 8th of March is a celebration of women’s achievements. It reminds us of the inequality of gender which still exists today yet highlights the steps in which women have overcome. The #ChooseToChallenge slogan provoked awareness to put our hands together in order to encourage and help other women next to us and around the world.
Which women have supported or inspired you in your career path?
I am fortunate to have my mother and mother in-law who continuously support me whilst working full-time. They were also a great support system while I studied for my CPA at the start of my accounting journey simultaneously raising 2 children. They are definitely credited for allowing me to be on the career path that I am on today. They are both hard workers and have shown to me the importance of sacrifice which has taught me to find a balance between being a maternal figure whilst also maintaining a consistent work life. Jacinta Arden is the woman I admire, she is a true leader who is empathetic and strong, she bravely embraces all challenges whilst also allowing her family values to prevail as she balances both worlds.
In your opinion, what can we as a society do to progress towards a Gender Equal world?
Treat everyone with RESPECT and FAIRNESS! Furthermore, women should stick together and encourage one another. Women should stand up for women and #ChooseToChallenge. I would like to see a society of equality regardless of gender.
“I hope she doesn’t feel any limitations. That she doesn’t have any sense of what girls can or can’t do.”- quote from Jacinta Arden for her daughter.
